MyGains

Instructions on importing .csv file

Depending on the brokerage firms, the number of days MyGains will go back to download the transactions varies from 30 days to 90 days or longer. To capture the trades beyond what the automatic download will support, you will need to import the transactions from your brokerage firms.

Most online brokerage firms allow you to download historical transactions in .csv format. Please see the following instructions to import transactions from your brokerage firm by importing .csv file.

  • Download and save the historic transactions file from your brokerage firms in .csv format.
  • Open an existing MyGains file or create a new file by clicking “File” then “Capital Gains File”.
  • Click “File” and select “Import”, then click on “CSV”. A window will open, locate the file you had just saved and click “Open”. The transactions will be automatically be loaded into MyGains.

Once you download the historical trades in MyGains, you will not have to do this again in the future since any future transactions will be downloaded automatically every time you open the program.

Please Note: If you import a file into an existing file with an overlapping time frame, the transactions may be loaded twice thus creating duplicating transactions. Please review the transactions after you import the file to ensure that there are no duplications. If there are any duplicated trades, you can delete the trade by right-clicking on the trade and selecting “Delete this Row”.

1. What if my brokerage firm only generates transactions in the Excel format?

Some brokerage firms do not generate historical transactions in the .csv format. However, you can easily convert an Excel file into .csv file by clicking on “File”, “Save As” and in the “Save as Type” drop-down box, select “CSV(Comma Delimited)”.

2. What if MyGains is not able to detect the columns of the CSV file and shows an error message?

You will need to save the comma separated file in the following format.

Security TypeTickerDescriptionDateTransaction TypeQuantityAmount

stockaaplApple Inc2/1/2008Buy to open101300
stockgoogGoogle Inc3/1/2008Sell to open209400
stockaaplApple Inc4/1/2008Sell to close5750

3. Do I have to continue to generate the file from my brokerage firms going forward?

No. Once you import your historical trades into MyGains with the .csv file, they will remain there. Going forward, it is important that you open MyGains at least once a month and allow the program to automatically download transactions directly from your brokerage firms.

4. I imported the file into MyGains and noticed that some trades are duplicated. Why?

If the time period of the file you imported overlaps with the automatic downloading, the trades will be duplicated. Therefore, it is important to review the transactions to make sure there is no duplication. Again, you will only have to do this once since going forward, trades will be automatically downloaded and you won’t have to import them again.

5. I imported the file into MyGains and it does not seem to work, what should I do?

If you imported a .csv file and the results are not correct, please contact MyGains support team.
